The death date of Magento 1 – JUNE 2020. Is this shocking? Whatever it may be the final confirmation is here and it says Magento 1 will end its existence in JUNE 2020.
After the release of Magento 2 on November 2015, we have heard a lot of rumours that the support of magneto 1 will probably end on November 18.
Although giving a great relief, Magento finally has stated that they understand their user’s need and will give more time to think and decide about the next steps for upgrading their platform.
Yes, you heard that right!
Magento has officially declared that they are committed to Magento 1 merchants and will surely support the older version until June 2020.
What to expect in the coming Year?
Magento Commerce/ Enterprise Edition:
Firstly, it is a big relief to know Magento declared to support their older versions until June 2020. There are total 6 old versions that were released between the years from 2010-2014.
So if you are a Magento merchant on versions 1.13 and 1.14, then you can expect software quality and security support right up till JUNE 2020.
If you are a Magento merchant of older version i.e. 1.9, 1.10, 1.11 and 1.12 then you can expect security patches only.
So no software policy guarantees but this do ensure that your site remains secure and complaint right up until June 2020.
Magento Open Source/ Community Edition:
If you are using Magento Open Source 1 also known as Community Edition, versions 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 and 1.9, then Magento will provide security patches until June 2020.
But this security patches will not provide any quality fixes because the main intention is to maintain compliance and not to invest in development or any sort of improvement of soon to be out-dated digital platforms.
How gear up for the deadline?
It may seem like JUNE 2020 is quite far away, right? But it’s actually only 19 months away and if you are not already planning your upgrade, then you are probably lacking behind.
